POSCO DX will work with AI semiconductor companies to develop high-performance/low-power ‘Edge AI Solution’ technology.
On April 6, POSCO DX signed a business agreement to develop “edge AI solution” technology applicable to industrial sites such as robots, manufacturing, and logistics, attended by Yoon Il-yong, managing director of R&D Center, and Kim Lokwon, CEO of DEEPX. Edge AI technology is a method in which real-time AI operations are performed at a site adjacent to data, not at a remote data center.
Through this cooperation, POSCO DX plans to secure “edge AI solution” technology that can process large-scale AI operations by installing DEEPX’s AI SoC (System on Chip) in its smart factory facility control system, PosMaster-PLC. By adopting such a flexible distributed architecture, it is expected to overcome the limitations of high cost and high power consumption of GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), lowering system construction costs and reducing power consumption, thereby contributing to ESG management.
DEEPX is a startup that designs AI semiconductors and has NPU (Neural Processing Unit) technology optimized for AI model inference. NPU is an AI-specific semiconductor optimized for artificial neural network calculations such as deep learning. Compared to high power consumption and expensive graphics processing units (GPUs), NPUs have the advantages of cost reduction, high performance, and low power.
Meanwhile, POSCO DX operates ‘IAR (Industrial AI Research)’, composed of AI experts in the company, to lead industrial AI technology innovation. IAR is developing various field technologies, such as ▲ Vision ▲ Anomaly Detection ▲ Data Scientist ▲ ML Ops.
